Wood Duck, Hooded Merganzer Nest Box

Your Duck Box is ideal for attracting a pair of Wood ducks or Merganzer's to your pond or area.  The ideal location for the box would be on a shallow flooded area like a beaver dam which has trees in it and surrounded by woods but I have had great success placing my houses around my ½ acre pond which is in a pasture with woods nearby.  I have had as many as 7 nesting pairs on this one pond.  I place my houses on a post located as near the water or in the water around the pond about 5-6 feet above ground.  You should use a ¼” lag bolt at the top and on the bottom.  I place a 1” piece of wood on the back of the box at the top as a spacer to give it a forward angle which helps the young when exiting the box and also allows the water to run off easily.  You should put about 6” of wood shavings in the bottom of the box for the nest.  The hen will cover the eggs with these shavings while laying and also pull out down from her body to line the nest.  The incubation will take 28 days.  If you note when she starts setting on the nest you should check it occasionally and about the 28th day you may be able to see the young.  They will not stay on the pond very long before she leads them away.  I have not been bothered by predators but snakes, raccoons, cats and other animals could get to the nest.  If this is a problem you could try mounting it on a metal post, even greasing the post.  Putting a baffle on the post to deter predators from climbing it.  Placing it in the water is also a great deterrent.  Your house should be in place by the end of February or before.  Good luck and I would be interested in knowing if you are successful.  You can send me an email at thewoodpecker@carolina.rr.com
